Wow - my baby girl is one! I can hardly believe it! This has been quite a year. The first 6 months were hard. They were filled with many sleepless nights, many tears were shed, and quite frankly I was full of doubt. Yet as I type this and think about those first months - I can barely remember them. It was all a blur. But as the months went by, we developed a routine, we figured out her sleep, got her reflux under control, and then she started doing stuff. Sitting up, playing with toys, playing with Eddie, moving and somehow this sweet little girl has started to emerge.
Sleep - For the most part things are unchanged in this area. Some days it seems like we are ready to transition to one nap a day, but for the most part, she still needs those two naps. Her morning naps are still around 9/9:30 and her afternoon naps are around 1. She continues to go to bed around 6:30 and sleeps through the night until 6:30/7 am. We are changing up her going-to-sleep routine a bit, but more about that below.
Eating - This month we have been really relaxed when it comes to introducing new foods. Basically no foods are off limits anymore and she is glad to finally be eating strawberries and ice cream! In a surprising turn of events, a week and a half ago, Edith decided to stop taking the bottle. No formula, no bottle. I guess it shouldn't be too shocking since she never was particularly attached to it, but it has presented a change at bedtimes. She used to fall asleep, first nursing and then taking a bottle. Most of the time she'll fall asleep on her own after placing her in the crib while wide-awake. Sometimes she'll fall sleep in our arms and other times we have to go into her room once and pick up the blankie and nuks she has tossed on the floor.
Teething - Originally I wasn't going to post about this, because even though I swear she is teething, nothing new has popped through, until this week! She is getting a few teeth on her top - maybe her I-teeth. It's been quite painful, but we are getting through it.
Moving - We definitely have a little walker on our hands. In the past couple of weeks she has really taken off and now walking is her preferred method of moving. Unlike Eddie, who couldn't get up on his own without holding on to something for a very long time, she can get up from the middle of the floor no problem.
Playing - Edith loves playing with all different kinds of toys and of course anything that Eddie is playing with too! She likes dinosaurs (and she'll make roaring noises), trucks (with sound effects), Duplos, the toy kitchen set, and reading books. She really pays attention to what Eddie is playing with and wants to do the same things. Of course her skills with some stuff aren't quite at his level, but it's amazing at how much she picks up from watching him.
Communication - This month I have really tried to do more signing with her. We are learning a few new signs and she started using the sign for water. She really seems to like the signing more and more and Eddie is getting into it now too. I have been recording a show on signing weekly and we watch some here and there a couple of times a week. She can say no, night-night, and we are trying to get her to say Eddie. She seems to be into talking and will often babble - especially while reading books.
Other - It's hard to remember our life without Edith in our family. She's funny and smart and so darn cute when she smiles. She also has a really strong personality and when she doesn't like something, she let's us know, loud and clear. She can scream very loudly and sometimes over the silliest things (like not wanting to wear her bib at dinner - tears!) She is very much a Mama's girl and loves to snuggle. Her 12 month check up was on Thursday. She weighs 21 lbs and 8 oz. She is 29 1/4 inches long. (Eddie was about two lbs heavier and a 1/4 inch taller at her age).
We cheated and took her 1 year pictures yesterday, but I wanted to make sure to get this posted on her birthday. She is feeling a little under the weather, but Uncas did a great job getting the pictures.
